Runway hair used to be designed just to accentuate clothes, until Oribe Canales, the “bad boy” from Cuba with the movie star good looks, successfully stole the spotlight with his signature deliberately disheveled hairstyles at the Chanel Show back in 1992, marking the beginning of a journey to triumphs and beauty. Let’s learn more about the milestones in Oribe Canales’s career.

Born in Cuba in 1956 (1956-2018), Oribe emigrated to the United States as a child. At 18, he moved to Buffalo, New York, where he met another legendary hairstylist Garren, who encouraged him to pursue his passion for hairdressing. In the late 1980s and early ‘90s, Oribe began a partnership with photographer Steven Meisel and makeup artist François Nars – the trio worked as a team to re-define beauty in that era.

Oribe formed a career-defining relationship with Gianni Versace in the early ’90s, which led to the creation of countless collaborations, including iconic print ads and commercials as well as groundbreaking runway shows that influenced Oribe’s signature style. During that time, he was also known for his palatial Fifth Avenue salon at Elizabeth Arden in New York City.

It wasn’t until the late ‘90s that Oribe became a household name thanks to his alliance with aspiring musician, Jennifer Lopez, who was a fan of his work since she was a teenager. He accompanied the rising star to Miami to shoot the cover of her first album, On the 6, and they continued working together during her meteoric rise. Lopez was everywhere and so was Oribe – the two collaborated for nearly two decades where Oribe had a hand in the creation of her fearless J-Lo persona.

In 2008, Oribe took his love of hairdressing and individual beauty and translated it into a collection of products he always envisioned – a range grounded in traditional hairstyling and blended with new-world technology and the finest ingredients. The result was an edited line focused on the needs of hair-obsessed.
