Every April, the Festival of Fashion and Photography at Hyères, in southern France has been attracting creative people from all walks of life including museum directors, designers, buyers and trend-watchers. JOYCE was pleased to attend and was excited to discover new creative talents. We also exchanged views with jury members such as Colin Greenwood from rock band Radiohead, Floriane de Saint Pierre, the renowned head-hunter in the fashion industry, Felipe Oliveira Baptista, the 2002 Hyeres festival winner, creative director of Lacoste and the “chair” of this year’s jury plus many more.
Director Jean-Pierre Blanc established the festival 28 years ago, since then it has been taking place in the Villa Noailles. This landmark cubist villa, situated on top of the hill overlooking the Riviera town, was built in the 1920s by Mallet-Stevens for an affluent couple Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles. They were passionate about art and design and dedicated to supporting talents. The interior decoration of the villa called upon an impressive list of prominent figures such as Eileen Gray and Francis Jourdain for the furniture; Mondrian and Alberto Giacometti for the art works. Blanc conceived the idea of the fashion and photography festival in honour of the villa’s history.
Despite the disappointing weather this year, the festival was a great success, showcasing a wide array of art works including a retrospective exhibition on the legendary fashion photographer Guy Bourdin; 10 first-time collections by young fashion designers and exhibiting works by 10 innovative photographers from all over the world. We would like to congratulate the Grand Prix du Jury Première Vision winner Satu Maaranen from Finland and The Photography Grand Prix du jury winner Petros Efstathiadis from Greece. Stay tuned for interviews with contestants and jury members on JOYCE.com.
All exhibitions are admission-free and remain open until the end of May.
