To coincide with Art Basel 2015, Joyce is proud to announce the Marni Roof Market will inaugurate on 14th March at the roof top of Central Pier No.4 . The market debuted in Milan last year to mark the maison’s 20th anniversary and the beginning of the year-long celebration. Out of all international cities, creative director Consuelo Castiligioni and her daughter Carolina chose Hong Kong as the first stop outside Italy. Joyce caught up with Carolina during the preparation and anticipation of the most glamorous, exuberant and stylish night market ever.
Why did you pick Hong Kong to host the Flower Market after Milan?
“Hong Kong is a crucial market. It’s a vibrant city, full of energy. It shares the experimental nature of Marni’s world and the peculiarity of our stylistic choices. Art has always been in the Marni DNA and that is why we decided to host our event during Art Basel Hong Kong. More importantly, Joyce has been collaborating with us since the very beginning, always been very supportive. It only felt right to celebrate our anniversary who believes in us!”
Are there any exclusive items for the Roof Market in Hong Kong? And which is your favourite?
“For the Hong Kong leg, the concept is about a continuing and natural evolution of the one in Milan. We enriched it with new elements and products, such as the Dot Bag, a cut-out bag in saffiano leather, which is printed on the outside with a contrasting colored paper lining on the inside. There are also lots of colourful fabrics, animal sculptures in metal framework and PVC and many many more! My favourites are the leather sandals that are hand painted in the style of the Italian Art Brut artists movement.”
Since it’s a night market, a gigantic light installation will be the main feature in the market. Tell us about this art/design piece.
“Massimo Bartolini is the Italian artist behind this amazing project. His vision is very close to Marni’s aesthetic and conceptual values. His works are always site-specific. So, in Hong Kong, since we will be on top of the pier, i.e. at the harbour front, he’s going to create a light installation in the shape of a lake, which will light up at sunset and in conjunction with an especially composed piece of music. The final effect is like one of those Sicilian traditional festivities, when streets are livened-up by thousands of lights and great music.”
