DITA EYEWEAR CREATIVE DIRECTOR TOMMY O’GARA SPEAKS ON THE THOM BROWNE COLLABORATION

  • Although he hails from the West coast, creative director of Dita eyewear, Tommy O’Gara, has been living in Japan for over 30 years. He recently visited Hong Kong for the launch of the Thom Browne x Dita eyewear, and met me dressed in a Thom Browne jacket, jeans and newsboy cap, finished off with a big white beard.

“I’m growing the beard for my son because he doesn’t believe there’s Santa Claus so I’m turning into Santa for him this Christmas!” he says of his quirky look.

O’Gara is not just an eyewear designer – he also describes himself as a “design junkie. I design a bit of everything, I recently built my own home in Japan, just outside Tokyo,” he says. Eyewear design is his first love and he co-owns an eyewear factory so he can oversee the entire process from the sketching of the glasses, to the material and making of each design.

“Thom Browne is very much about the 1940’s and 1950’s and we are very into the vintage style, with exceptional quality. You can find the lightest but most durable titanium arms and frames at Dita. I think we are a good fit.”

“I like designing eyewear because it’s a small piece of design, but it frames a person’s face. It has to be functional and it needs to be comfortable,” he says.

The premiere collection features 20 styles that draw inspiration from master architects, politicians, studio artists, industrial designers and professors of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Acetate styles in specifically developed colour combinations and treatments are complimented with genuine leather and metal mesh side cups. All components were custom designed for each style. Each pair is marked with Browne’s signature red, white and blue logo tip and four striped hinge. For the metal collection, all eyewear frames are made of high-grade titanium delivering strength, lightness and comfort. Key styles are finished with natural horn brow bars and cable temple ends, which is unseen in any other collection today.
