Frédéric Malle’s latest perfume collection translates the people he admires into unique, reverential scents. Drawing on the aesthetics, thoughts and ideas of some of the most creative individuals of our time, Malle’s collection pays homage to their craft through his own, creating perfume portraits. In his guise as perfume editor, Frédéric Malle commissions skilled perfumers to construct scents that reflect and revere his chosen subjects.

The Celebrated Subject
The first in these series of olfactory portraits is the celebrated Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten, whom Frédéric Malle refers to as his ‘hero’. As one of the group of Antwerp Fashion Academy graduates (termed the Antwerp Six) who put Belgium on the fashion map in the early 1990’s, Dries Van Noten is renowned for maintaining complete creative control of his brand.

For Frédéric Malle, Dries Van Noten’s designs conjure up images of clean Nordic interiors, where seemingly diverse components sit side by side, cleverly fusing whilst allowing each element’s individual beauty to flourish. Frédéric Malle also shares Van Noten’s dislike of ostentation and the importance he places on a sense of comfort, all of which he hoped to convey through a scented portrait.

The Olfactory Master
Frédéric Malle commissioned master perfumer Bruno Jovanovic to translate Dries Van Noten’s distinctively sober yet sensual use of juxtaposition into a scent. Frédéric Malle drew Jovanovic into Van Noten’s complex world in order that he could create the unique scented atmosphere befitting of one of his heroes.

The Masterpiece
The highly creative olfactory interpretation of one of fashion’s most enigmatic designers took 18 months to create. Noted for his fusion of contrasting fabrics and styles, the interpretive perfume is commensurate in its complexity. The exquisite perfume is composed around natural sandalwood, exotic and traditional in equal measure. Blended with exotic accents of bergamot, lemon, jasmine, vanilla and saffron, the resulting scent is as distinctive, unique and sensual as Dries Van Noten’s creations.
