Founded in 2008 by Bertille Carpentier and Martial Dumas, Non Sans Raison has become
in only a decade a major and unique actor in the field of Limoges porcelain. French luxury maker
of porcelain objects, Non Sans Raison takes a fresh look at the tableware and make live an art
industry born 250 years ago. Through its creations and its collaborations with designers, artists or
manufacturers, Non Sans Raison combines contemporary style with traditional savoir-faire
to make a high quality production.
While maintaining a conscientious respect for traditional techniques, Non Sans Raison integrates
into its production innovative working processes and tools, looking to renew the way of handle
the porcelain in the 21st century. Confronting tradition with the modern social and gastronomic
uses, their objects reflects an art of living in transformation. The porcelains of Non Sans Raison emerges from a rich aesthetic universe that finds its source
in the visual arts from yesterday, the modern pop culture and the prospective design of tomorrow.
The identity of this porcelain manufacturer travels through time, and seeks to build a bridge
between past and present, between know-how and creation.
Non Sans Raison owes its growing success to the development of innovative forms which is of unalterable modernity. Dinner sets are decorated with graphic patterns in large firing for optimal durability and everyday use. The lines, the geometric figures and the multiple angles of each dinner set allow an original dressing of dishes on the plate; as an extension of the artistic creation of the chef, a staging, an invitation to understand the optical construction. Their unique line of Wall Plates, a piece of art and wall dresser at the same time, as well as the development of original shapes, have led to develop the brand in the world of design. The brand also became famous through the diversity and the plurality of its collaborations with visual artists and designers and the suitability of participative events about porcelain. Official supplier or confidential partner, Non Sans Raison also uses its talents to create custom-made shapes through a control exercised over the entire porcelain production chain. Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Colette, WSN, Alife & co, Hotel Amour, La Maison Blanche in Paris, El Celler De Can Roca, Nerua, Alife, Union Capital Group, Julie Gaillard Design, Triode Gallery, Claudio Colucci, American Vintage, Alain Ducasse, Joel Robuchon, Anna Wintour, Noto Paris and many others have already trusted them.
Non Sans Raison is present today on the hotel trade market, in high-end restaurants and selective distribution market, in concept stores and galleries. Bertille Carpentier is born in 1985. She graduated from ISEM-ESMOD in Paris and has a master in fashion research. She started as an editor for several magazines print and web in graphic, design and fashion’s sectors. Then Bertille worked as a research manager in marketing strategy and creation in consulting and forecasting agencies. Finally she created Non Sans Raison with the desire to breathe new life into the porcelain from Limoges. Martial Dumas is born in 1983. He graduated in graphic art, he began working as a graphic designer in fashion and spirits. Afterward Martial integrated the school ISEM-ESMOD, where he met Bertille. After several experiences in marketing management and design coordination in Haute-Couture, he created Non Sans Raison in 2008. At the same time he created Deuxième Chambre, a studio specialized in top of the range handmade silkscreen printing. Also Bertille and Martial found Coalition, a consulting agency for upgrading products. The agency deals in perpetuating and bringing products made with ancestral craftsmanship up to today’s standards. In parallel with their catering activity created in 2014 with Non Sans Raison Tasting room, they exploit since 2016 the food truck La Grande Ourse and the corner La Petite Ourse in Limoges.
The desire to exhibit at the JOYCE Gallery on the occasion of our tenth anniversary is not a coincidence. This is where all began in June 2008, more precisely on 18 June 2008. This is where we presented our first three emblematic collections Avant, Ici, Maintenant - Chronos - Square, all three in platinum. A platinum was specially designed to be used in dishwasher. The scenography was mainly in dishwashers where our plates were meddling with other key objects which inspired our approach. Today, this presentation remains an emblem for our brand and it has been reproduced several times acording to the current trends and inspirations. During this first exhibition, a unique approach has already emerged around three convictions: ethics, innovation and modernity. Our desire was to allow the Limoges porcelain to penetrate into places where it did not be present until then. Apart from awakening of this sleeping beauty, our permanent challenge is to make it exist that belongs to our generation as to previous generations; one of our requirements is to do it with ethics. With a strong sense of the formula, Non Sans Raison wrote its manifesto, its editorial line and its method since its first year of existence. One month after this exhibition, we collaborate with the Alife brand, Clark magazine and the Colette concept store. This first collaboration was a real boost. What better way for our plates to go around the world in 60 days and to be exhibited in the shops as trophies. Le Bon Marché also played the exclusivity card for six months. Then it was the invitation to the Maison & Objet trade show on Scènes d’Intérieur in January 2009, where the company Non Sans Raison was immediately noticed by the decoration professionals and managed, just a few months after its launch, to expand its distribution network abroad. Since then 10 years have passed and Non Sans Raison is enriched with collections, experiences, events and collaborations and this is what we want to showyou through this retrospective exhibition. It will also be turned towards the future with the presentation of new projects and collections. Because it also depicts the story of Non Sans Raison since its inception while proposing a reflection on what could be the porcelain of tomorrow, this exhibition is as much retrospective as prospective.
"Earth, earth! I create, I invent, I play, I imagine, A small ceramic world, sensitive, poetic and joyful »
Born in 1966, Jacqueline Alonso lives and works in Nîmes, in the south of France. Twenty years of a passionate self-taught journey, shared between creation and transmission. She exhibits regularly in galleries and participates in ceramics markets, fairs and festivals. The "earth" is part of her life. As a faithful friend, both generous and demanding. It is a beautiful adventure, which she willingly shares with whoever wishes. Each character, in chamfered sandstone, is modeled then colored. Each piece is unique and responds to the previous one or ... to the next. The story, for who wants to hear it, is in constant evolution. Her inspiration is childhood and especially the trace it leaves deep inside us. A childhood lived, dreamed or fantasized. A sensitive and poetic universe that speaks to all of us …
