Anabela Chan has collected exotic birds taxidermy and rare butterfly specimen for over 10 years, where she travels into the jungles with local entomologists to study them. All the parrots in the photography are from her personal collection, where she also used to draw and paint from direct observations. She think the most beautiful things come from nature, be it colours, forms, textures or geometries and her work strives to capture a moment of that magic into something can be admired forever.
She likes to shoot her jewellery like objets d'art, because they are like objects of desire; and the effect of the photography is almost like a modern interpretation of the Dutch and Flemish Still Life paintings from the 1600s to 1800s, one of her favorite art genres.
The blackness of the background gives a sense of mystery; it also elevates the intensity of the magnificent colours in the jewels and subject. Anabela once met a 85 years-old renowned painter at the Royal College of Art show and she told her the most seductive and powerful aspect of an artist work is its sense of mystery.
